Description

The bluish glow of the Iris Nebula is a reflection of the light from the hot, massive star at the center of the nebula, HD 200775. The star's light is scattered off dust grains in the nebula (which are 10 to a 100 times smaller than dust particles in our own atmosphere), giving the nebula's core its distinctive blue color. The filaments of the nebula glow with a faint reddish photoluminescence as some dust grains have converted the star's invisible ultraviolet radiation to visible red light. Infrared observations indicate that this nebula contains complex carbon molecules known as PAHs, polyaromatic hydrocarbons. We are exposed to these compounds in smoke, car fumes and asphalt vapors to name a few. So space is polluted too--though ironically these PAHs are potentially key precursors to the beginning of life. The Iris Nebula (and its pollution or beginnings of life?) is about 1300 light-years away. The blue petals are about 6 light years across.

The image data is from the RASC Robotic Telescope, details below. I stacked with DSS, then processed with StarTools as LRGB, Topaz AI Lowlight Noise Reduction and Photoshop using an L(LRGB) protocol.
